Chapter 15: Hope

I was finished with my book and I had nothing else to do for the night. I wasn’t in the mood to watch TV and it was too early to go to sleep.

Dinner was a little less awkward today. There was no talk of vampires so that was a plus. Half-way through dinner, Angela had to excuse herself for a work call. She worked a lot. So did Caleb. But Caleb worked from home more often.

The door to my room burst open, but no one was there. I got up and carefully walked closer to the door. “Hello?”

I heard giggling from behind me. I jumped out of the room and looked towards the laughter.

Lexie and Hayden came walking down the hall. Lexie rolled her eyes. “Don’t worry. It’s only Aria. She’s in a prankster mood today.”

Aria appeared on my bed, a sinister grin on her lips. “Hi Hope.”

“What are you doing?”

“You were bored. I was fixing that.”

“By scaring me? Don’t you think I’ve got enough to fear?”

She waved her hand. “Better get used to it. You’re a complicated girl, and something tells me, this is just the beginning.”

I didn’t argue with her. She was probably right. It looked like I was always going to attract trouble. “What are you guys doing here?”

“Hayden thought we should have a girls night.”

I looked between the three of them. “I’ve never really had one of those before.”

“It’s a sleepover, Hope,” Aria said. “We stuff our faces with terrible food and regret it the next day.”

“Okay. Why?”

Aria glared at me and let out an exasperated sigh. “Because it’s tradition, okay? Who’s ordering the pizza?”

“It’s already on its way,” Hayden said.

Lexie sat on the bed and just watched us. I wish I could tell what she was feeling, but I didn’t have a clue. She looked stoic. But I imagined she felt a mix of sadness, anger, and maybe a bit of regret.

“Come help me get the snacks and drinks,” Hayden said to Aria. She looked at Lexie and then at me right in the eyes.

Dare I say it, Hayden actually was a good friend to Lexie.

After Aria and Hayden left the room, I sat down next to Lexie. She looked at me and smiled a sad smile.

“Sorry, I’m not really in a partying mood,” she said quietly.

“Don’t be. I’m not either.”

She looked ahead at the wall, just staring. A couple times she would open her mouth to speak, but she’d stop herself.

The pain in her eyes broke my heart. It was a pain I knew too well myself. Loss. A pain I wouldn’t wish on anyone, least of all Lexie.

Lexie had a heart made of gold. She didn’t deserve this. Neither did Jade.

“I feel like she died,” she finally said. “Only, she’s still here, but not really. It’s so confusing, and I just don’t know how to feel right now.”

“I know. But, Lexie, technically Jade is still alive.”

“That wasn’t Jade, Hope.”

“But she is Jade deep down. Kane has messed her up.”

“I really hate that guy.
